Word of the week: Facundity - eloquence, or the talent for speaking with readiness, ease, and fluency.

Hi readers and writers! Welcome to this week’s Horror Tree newsletter. I’ve had a busy week of attending a local horror fest and a book launch for the wonderful Ava Morwood or aka Alison Littlewood. For more info, check out my posts on Instagram. I’ve hardly had time to catch my breath haha. In between daily life and this chaos, I’ve been making time to write a short story for a sub call that caught my interest. I’ve been writing notes here and there and plan to sit down at my computer and just write. I’ll be writing in first person which I rarely do, so it will be an interesting challenge. In other news, I’ve received my e-copy of the forthcoming horror anthology Of Beasts & Bones by Inky Bones Press which will be out on 28th April. It is looking so good! Apart from being an included author, I highly recommend preordering it as there’s such a range of horror authors!

You can find me (Corinne Pollard) lurking on Bluesky @corinnepwriter.bsky.social, Instagram & Threads @Corinnepwriter and my website, corinnepollard.wordpress.com  Now, onto the latest articles on writing from around the web.

Your Dog Deserves Better Than Mystery Kibble

Most kibble is cooked at extreme temperatures that strip out the nutrients your dog actually needs. Your dog deserves better than that.

Spot & Tango's UnKibble is the only human-grade dog food that delivers all the benefits of fresh food without taking up fridge space. Made with USDA-grade meats, plus fresh fruits and vegetables, then gently dried at low temps to lock in up to 99% of nutrients. As vets say: "This is the food dogs were born to eat."

It's pantry-friendly, delivered to your door, and comes with a personalized scoop sized to your dog's exact needs. No guesswork, no prep, no refrigeration.

350,000+ dog parents have already made the switch — and 87% saw health improvements in their pup after switching.

🌟 Horror Tree / Trembling With Fear Updates

Hi all.
Not a lot of real updates this time around. Fixed a few bugs that popped up with the new layout and have 2 more that were reported that I’m looking into. Hopefully, this weekend!

Trembling With Fear needs a few more drabbles to come in as time permits, and the next set of physical copies are still in the works! (SLOWLY! I apologize!)

And now, I will return you to your regularly scheduled newsletter!

“Dark, visceral, poetic and devastatingly honest, Robertsons writing lives at the intersection of unabashed hunger, desire, beauty and repulsion. These tales strike at the heart of the queer, gothic soul. They are beautifully painful and darkly necessary. A must read for all those who love unflinching art.”
-Suzan Palumbo Author of Countess and Skin Thief.

🌟 Articles

This week I’m sharing articles from General, Business, and Craft. Firstly, Jane Friedman’s blog has author and social psychologist, Anne Beall, explore how being more compassionate helped her writing. This is a deeply personal article about how one’s judgement can impact one’s character and their writing. I particularly enjoyed that by being compassionate with our characters, we then should be compassionate with ourselves and our inner critic. In business, Writers in the Storm has author Gale Leach examine how to self-publish online in great detail. This is just the first part and there’s an interesting timeline factsheet that could help any wannabe self-published author. Lastly in craft, Fiction University looks at how to revise a first draft manuscript. This is where your self-editing skills come in handy. Janice Hardy asks the questions that you should be putting to your manuscript.

🌟 Free Fiction Roundup

Free Fiction Roundup:

This week’s free fiction is a mixed bag across the speculative realm from spider-infestations to a secretive magical man. Firstly “The Spiders You Swallow in Your Sleep” is a psychological horror about a girl called Libby who lives with an infestation of spiders inside her mind. This flash story dives into mental illness, bodily harm, violence, and body horror as Libby attempts to find a solution to her infestation. It is an unsettling read. Next, “We Used To Be Best Friends” is a dark fantasy about a war between humans and a dog terrorist group. Dogs have gained the ability to speak and intellect on par as a human. Reflecting war and terrorism to its core, this is a disturbing read for any dog lover. Lastly, “Nana’s Reticent Wizard” is a fantasy flash story about family and secrets. Nana marries Papa who seems to have magical abilities and once he is gone, she discovers more about him and the secrets he kept. It is a cosy read about how someone can bring such magic during their lifetime as well as afterwards. Enjoy reading!

The Spiders You Swallow in Your Sleep” by Wendy Nikel at The Nightmare Magazine.

We Used To Be Best Friends" by Ian Salavon at Zooscape.

Nana’s Reticent Wizard” by Michael Pacheco at Latinelit.

🌟 Writing Prompt

Writing Exercise: The Charity Shop

Your protagonist works at a charity shop, and after a motorbike accident where they received a brain injury, they begin hearing voices. But these voices only occur at the charity shop.

Over time, they slowly realise that the voices are coming from the inanimate objects in the shop.

Most are pleasant with interesting stories to tell about their past owners. Except there’s a doll or two at the back of the shop who are often overlooked by customers.

Their inner voices are growing louder every day, growing with hate and venom. They hate being ignored.

What happens next is up to you…Let your imagination run wild!

If you post any writing content during the week and think it would be a good fit for us to feature, do reach out and let us know at [email protected]
