Hi readers and writers! Happy Friday 13th and welcome to this week’s Horror Tree newsletter. Yes, it is another Friday 13th, aren’t we lucky, eh?, and I’ll be doing my usual watching horror films and snuggling under blankets with popcorn. Feel free to follow my film journey on Insta stories. I must admit I’ve not had a great week. I think I’m still recovering from the Ghost Story Festival, but I did see a submission call that has got my mind working on a short story idea. Inspiration can certainly come from anywhere, and it is a relief that my creativity is still active even when my body isn’t. I’m also going to swap tactics and stop trying to write on the computer. Not only is the screen more exhausting, but the white document page seems to panic me, and the words refuse to come. So I’m going to try the old notebook and pen method and visit some local cafes. I hope by sharing this that it inspires you too, especially to not giving up.

“Dark, visceral, poetic and devastatingly honest, Robertsons writing lives at the intersection of unabashed hunger, desire, beauty and repulsion. These tales strike at the heart of the queer, gothic soul. They are beautifully painful and darkly necessary. A must read for all those who love unflinching art.”
-Suzan Palumbo Author of Countess and Skin Thief.
🌟 Articles
This week, I’m sharing articles from General, Business, and Craft. Firstly, Jane Friedman’s blog has guest author Lea Page share a personal story about how a negative comment on her article affected her and what she did in response. When we put our writing out into the world, we’re sharing it with the whole world, even with people who have nothing but negative to say. I love how Lea Page decided to use the negative ‘sea hag’ into a positive sweatshirt. Next in business, FoxPrint Editorial advises on how to know when you’re ready to query your work. By looking at your first chapters in depth, you could be ready to query the whole book, and there’s some great tips to help. Lastly, in craft, Fiction University looks at five ways writers can develop character voices. There’s a great list of questions that will prompt writers to focus on character voice,s which will in turn lead to further character development.

🌟 Free Fiction Roundup
This week’s free fiction is horror in different sub-genres from eerie dolls to gory rope. Firstly “The Doll Problem” is a short story about a haunted doll that turns up out of nowhere. It is a compelling read with escalating horror that will give you nightmares. Next, “My Architecture” is a psychological horror story that looks at child loss. There’s great imagery comparing the building where the narrator lives to their own mental state. It is a sad short story that will haunt you. Lastly, “Absolutely Knot” is a body horror that looks at marriage from a woman’s point of view. Claire marries Mark, and as part of the marriage, Mark binds her body with rope from his mouth. It is a gruesome story that looks at what Claire must pay for changing her mind. Enjoy reading!
“The Doll Problem” by Angela Liu at Nightmare Magazine.
“My Architecture" by George Nevgodovskyy at Crow & Cross Keys.
“Absolutely Knot” by Winona Morris at Carnage House Publishing.

Writing Exercise: Chocoholic
A teenager is sent to a health camp by her parents. Her diet is controlled, and she is pushed to breaking point with an exercise coach.
Every night she craves chocolate. Milk, white, dark. She dreams of it, swims in it. When she wakes, she cries.
Her coach assures her it is just cravings and it will pass, and the teenager wishes she could get rid of such cravings permanently.
Seeing how much she is suffering, one day the coach hands her a solution. The coach calls it a cravings killer, but the teenager thinks it looks more like a bulbous weed. It sends chills down her spine. Its face wails.
Desperate though, the teenager swallows it.
